Momentum is one of South Africa’s leading providers of insurance and asset management services to the South African market. Momentum Multiply with over, which has over 70,000 members, is Momentum’s wellness and customer loyalty program which offers members awards and discounts for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Momentum Multiply team were not happy with their current solution and approached Entelect Software to provide a full analysis of their current IT environment, a redesign of the Multiply portal and suggestions to improve their IT systems architecture. We took ownership of the analysis and specification phase, project management, software and solution architecture, system development, deployment and post production support.

Based on the initial analysis, the following key arrears were considered when implementing the new system:
  • The system was designed to provide a fluid user experience thus encouraging member interaction and usage
  • The SDLC process was improved and further documentation and processes were employed to improve rapid development and knowledge sharing across the team
  • Latest frameworks and technologies were selected to maximise the development times by using pre-built generic frameworks and tools
  • The system was designed to be more scalable, adaptable and maintainable by using proven best practices and methodologies.
The new web based portal allows members to log in to the system to view a personalised Multiply profile of themselves with interactive reporting. In addition the users have access to a wide range of tools, assessments, advice and incentives for clients to adapt their behaviour to improve their overall wellbeing.

The application was written in Java 1.6, using the Spring framework with a IBM DB2 database and IBM Websphere Portal 7.0 server amongst other technologies.

The web portal has been successfully deployed and a second phase of the project was commissioned. The new website was received favourably by the business owners, call centre agents and customers.
Zurich is the 3rd largest underwriter and insurance broker in the world, with presence in the in South African market. Zurich in South Africa (ZICSA), based in Johannesburg with subsidiaries in Zimbabwe and Botswana, provides short-term insurance products and services to individuals, commercial and corporate customers.

Entelect was tasked to take ownership of all delivery aspects of the project and develop a functional and interactive web portal to provide brokers with critical information and the ability to capture application data.

The first deployment of the Broker Portal, known as Broker Zone, was delivered in September 2012 and formed a key element of a wider business transformation program. The solution addressed the following:
  • Improved broker experience by improving self-service options and access to data
  • Improved processing efficiency, delivering a faster response and better service to the broker community
  • Increased quality consistency of data received from brokers
  • Reduced business operational costs for end-to-end processes.
The Entelect team took an agile approach for the implementation methodology, using a combination of scrum and continuous integration. This thinking played a large part in the design and selection of technologies that enabled integration with other systems in a true service oriented architecture. It also resulted in this solution being elected as the flagship IT project for Zurich South Africa showcasing continuous agile delivery, and was one of five international projects selected by the Zurich Global Project Management Forum to trial the Scrum Agile software development process within Zurich. In October 2012 this solution was awarded the “best project” runner up to Germany.

Next possible steps in the project include integration of quoting and new business, policy endorsements and cancellations, publishing of policy schedules.

The technology stack was based on a JEE platform, composed of the Spring Framework suite of products (Spring Core, Spring MVC, Spring LDAP, JMS, ORM, Spring Integration, Spring Batch , Spring Web Services, Spring Security), Hibernate, IBATIS, Site Mash, ehCache, EJB and JQuery.
